After the passing of a month in this apocalyptic hell on earth, my day became ever so fucking routine.I would arise at 6 o clock, despondent, depressed and desperate with the cries from the banshes ( nurses ) ringing in my ears, and eat whatever breakfast that was on offer.Breakfast would be completed by the nurses offering tea or coffee to anybody who so wished it and the normal topic of conversation, amongst the inmates, revolved around whether the coffee contained caffeine or not.Upon the drinking of my coffee I would proceed to walk from one end of the straight narrow corridor to the other, repeating this for hour, after hour, after hour at a time, conversing with nobody and stopping only to go to the toilet.

I would have my lunch at twelve o clock and by 1 o clock the pacing would begin again, up and down, up and down, incessantly up and down the long straight corridor, talking with nobody, up and down, up and down until tea arrived at 5 o clock.By 6 o clock the pacing resumed again, up and down, up and down, talking with nobody, up and down the long straight marbled corridor.Come 9.30 pm when the place fell silent and bedtime approached, I lay down on my bed filled with a overwhelming sense of deep, deep, gut wrenching anxiety and sleep only came in short fleeting bursts.

For anybody who can not grasp the significance, or mental turmoil involved, behind this continuous pacing up and down the narrow corridor, I will put it in a very simple way by making the following analogy : The film is called “Midnight Express” and I refer to a clip in that picture whereby the American, who had been arrested with a minimal amount of drugs on him at the airport and who had already served three years in a Turkish prison as he had been made an example of, is transferred to a notorious Turkish lunatic asylum, and the scene revolves around him walking continuously around a pole with all the other hardcore lunatics, when he suddenly stops, turns around and starts walking in the opposite direction.
